Fish hatchery with more than 100 ponds. More than 230 bird species have been recorded on the site, making it one of Kentucky’s top birding spots.
Minor E. Clark Fish Hatchery is set on the edge of the Daniel Boone National Forest. There are more than 100 ponds that produce bass, catfish, muskellunge, and walleye for stocking in area lakes. Fifteen or more species of ducks may be seen here from fall through spring. But it’s shorebirds for which the hatchery is best known. When water levels in ponds are low, fall can produce a notable assortment of shorebirds, with the peak coming in late August and September. Around 30 species have been seen here, including rarities such as Piping Plover, Hudsonian Godwit and Red-necked Phalarope. In winter Bonaparte's Gull is seen with the common Ring-billed Gull. Bald Eagle can be found for most of the year. Nesting birds include Yellow Warbler, Northern Parula, Yellow-throated Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat and Orchard Oriole.
Minor E Clark Fish Hatchery is located near Cave Run Lake, about 50 miles east of Lexington. Press P in the map for directions. Drive or walk around the hatchery ponds for shorebirds, waterfowl and other migrants. Visitors are welcome to explore the hatchery grounds during daylight hours. As you drive in off highway 801, there’s a trail near the first building on the left, which can provide some good birding. Recently drained ponds provide habitat for shorebirds. Check the trees surrounding the area for neotropical migrants.
