Wildlife drive that takes you 11 miles through a restored wetland. 367 different bird species have been observed so far.
Lake Apopka is the third largest lake in Florida. The north shore of Lake Apopka is a haven for bird watching. The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive leads along the north side of the lake through former farmland that was rewetted as part of a restoration project. The polluted water from the lake is passed through the marshland so that the water is then returned cleaner. The nutrient content of the supplied lake water enables lush marsh vegetation, which provides a basis for life for many bird species. Among the birds you can encounter are Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Tricolored Heron, White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Cattle Egret, Osprey, Red-shouldered Hawk, Little Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron and Red-winged Blackbird .
Lake Apopka is located 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Orlando. The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive can only be accessed by car or bicycle. The entrance is on the east side of the area. The road is one-way and you exit the area on the north side. The Wildlife Drive is open Friday to Sunday and on national holidays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (last entry). The Wildlife Drive will close at 5:00 p.m. There is no entry fee.
There is only one parking at the "Historic Pump House". There are several information points for the audio tour along the route - see links to the map download. There are toilets at the entrance, at the "Historic Pump House" and at information point 7.
