Description

Tehidy Woods is a popular public woodland area. It has numerous footpaths and walkways through the trees and around the shallow lake and ponds. A stream runs through the valley and footpaths can be taken out of the woods along the North Cliffs of Cornwall.

The woods are easier to watch during the winter months and there is a feeding area in the Rose Garden where you can sit and see woodland species visiting the feeders. These birds include Pic épeiche, Geai des chênes, Sittelle torchepot, Mésange bleue, Mésange noire, Mésange charbonnière and Mésange à longue queue. Other birds here include Pic vert, Tarin des aulnes, Pinson des arbres, Chardonneret élégant, Rougegorge familier, Accenteur mouchet, Roitelet huppé, Roitelet triple-bandeau and Grive mauvis in winter.

The ponds are shallow and do not hold many birds but you will find Cygne tuberculé, Grèbe castagneux, Fuligule morillon, Canard colvert, Gallinule poule-d'eau, Goéland argenté and Mouette rieuse here. There is currently a pair of Canard mandarin in residence and Martin-pêcheur d'Europe can often been seen.

In summer Pouillot véloce and Fauvette à tête noire can be seen and heard but there is a very large and noisy Rookery here too which can be distracting! Grimpereau des bois are scarce but recorded occasionally at the west end of the woods. Very occasionally the woods can attract migrants and the odd scarcity like Pouillot à grands sourcils, Gobemouche noir, Gobemouche gris and once a Pouillot de Hume.

Accès

Tehidy Woods are located along the north Cornwall coast, north of the town of Camborne. There are two main car parks, one at the north along the B3301 and another at the south from Mountwhistle Road. Click on the P in the map for directions. There is a cafe with toilet facilities at the south car park.

From the south car park, the path off to the left is best as it is a designated Nature Area with no access to dogwalkers. This takes you past the lakes and through the woods. It is then a circular walk up to the Rose Garden if you want to visit the feeders. The walking route shown on the map is about 1,8 mile (3 km).

Informations supplémentaires

BEWARE OF THE SQUIRRELS AND RATS! The woods are a very popular place with the general public and families with small children. They feed the Squirrels, which in turn attracts rats. Best to avoid at weekends if at all possible, parking can be an issue.
