Description

This sheltered inlet is an internationally important wetland site for wildlife. Roughly half of the reserve is intertidal saltmarsh and mudflats, with the remainder of the reserve consisting of farmland, copses, lagoons, reedbeds and shingle beaches. You can see birds like Bernache cravant, Canard pilet, Sterne naine, Barge à queue noire and Aigrette garzette. In winter large numbers of Bernache cravant, Vanneau huppé and Barge à queue noire use the harbour or surrounding fields, with a supporting cast which includes Pluvier argenté, Pluvier doré and Bécasseau variable. Grèbe esclavon are seen offshore and Harle huppé in the harbour. Waders and wildfowl linger well into spring, including Courlis cendré, Pluvier argenté, Barge rousse and Barge à queue noire, Bécasseau variable, Canard pilet, Canard siffleur, Sarcelle d'hiver and Bernache cravant. Smaller migrants arrive, such as Phragmite des joncs, Rousserolle effarvatte and Pouillot fitis, Fauvette à tête noire and Pouillot véloce sing in the bushes and Traquet motteux hop about the beach. In summer Sterne naine and Sterne pierregarin can be seen fishing in the harbour.
