Description
Resident and passage waders, especially at Haven and at Longhoughton Steel, 1.5 km north. Large Pluvier doré flocks in winter, with records of Pluvier bronzé and Pluvier fauve. Passage Courlis corlieu and Bécasseau cocorli. Winter Bécasseau violet. The tidal foreshore is unusual in that there are sheltered areas of shallow water protected from waves by reefs at almost all states of the tide, making it an important feeding location for the Sterne naines that breed at the nearby Long Nanny (q.v.) and other terns.
Plongeon catmarin and Plongeon imbrin, and occasionally Plongeon arctique, can be seen offshore in winter, and Plongeon à bec blanc has been recorded.
Vagrant passerines on foreshore and at Seaton Point, 1.5 km south in 2020-22 included Gorgebleue à miroir, Hypolaïs ictérine and Traquet du désert. Bruant des neiges regular in winter. Pie-grièche écorcheur and Pie-grièche grise have both occurred on passage.
