It is a breeding place for Héron cendré that can be observed from the path, and a habitat for waterfowl and for birds living in extensively used meadows. It is also a spawning ground for numerous amphibian species. Bird species that can be observed here include Héron cendré, Phragmite des joncs, Moineau friquet, Gallinule poule-d'eau, Foulque macroule, Canard colvert, Hirondelle de fenêtre, Hirondelle rustique, Martinet noir, Épervier d'Europe, Faucon crécerelle, Buse variable, Tarin des aulnes, Pic épeiche, Mésange bleue, Mésange à longue queue, Mésange charbonnière, Rougegorge familier, Pinson des arbres, Merle noir, Étourneau sansonnet, Corneille noire, Canard mandarin, Harle bièvre, Tourterelle turque, Pigeon ramier, and Cigogne blanche.

There is a public car park next to the lake. However, travelling by bus number 912 from Zürich Bellevue or bus number 919 from the Küsnacht train station (both to the bus station Itschnach-Tägermoos) is recommended. You can also reach Schübelweiher on different walkways leading there from Küsnacht train station in ca. 40 minutes.

From February, Héron cendré breed on an island. This allows fascinating observations of the feeding and the progress of the young birds from the walking path. Occasionally a Cigogne blanche may be looking for a bite in one of the meadows next to the lake.
