Description

Utlängan is an island in the Karlskrona archipelago. The island is situated the furthest out to sea of any of the archipelago's islands. Utlängan is approximately 3 km long and 1.5 km across. The island covers just over 215 hectares. 329 bird species have been recorded at Utlängan. Along the coastal meadows and seaweed rich bays waders often rest. Most of them are found in early May and from late July-August. The most common species are: Chevalier gambette, Bécasseau variable andGrand Gravelot. Many rarer species like Phalarope à bec étroit, Bécassine sourde and Bécasseau falcinelle are regularly found.

Utlängen is an excellent observation area for migration. Thousands of migrating Bernache nonnette, Bernache cravant, Macreuse noire, Macreuse brune, Eider à duvet, Sterne pierregarin, Grue cendrée, Harelde boréale and Courlis cendré can be found. The area is one of the best in Sweden when it comes to migrating waterfowl.

The island is a last stopover in Sweden for many migrating passerine birds during migration season. Large amounts of Pouillot fitis (has been seen in the thousands), Tarin des aulnes (Has been seen in the thousands), Étourneau sansonnet and Roitelet huppé can often be found. The area is often visited by rare eastern warblers like Pouillot de Pallas, Pouillot à grands sourcils and Fauvette épervière. Other rare passerine birds sometimes found are Loriot d'Europe, Bruant ortolan and Roitelet triple-bandeau.
