Stornäset is one of the most valuable bird resting and breeding grounds in Sweden. The mix of deciduous forest, meadows and pastures is a magnet for birds.
Stornäsets Nature Reserve offers great opportunities to see birds. Both in spring and autumn, lots of birds are can be seen here. The 149 hectare big reserve has a large contiguous deciduous forest area that is surrounded by meadows and pastures. The county's largest claimed seafront meadow and its connecting species-rich shallow seabeds attract thousands of birds, especially during migration. Several hides are built to allow you to watch birds without disturbing them.
Stornäset is a very important resting place for migratory birds. The shallow beaches, sand reefs and open meadows provide rest and food to the long-distance migratory birds. Here, waders and ducks thrive, but many passerines and birds of prey also pass by Stornäset. Most birds stop only for a short time, before moving on on their way to or from northern Sweden, Finland or Russia.
Among the water birds that like to stay here are, for example Canard pilet, Canard souchet, Grèbe huppé, and Cygne chanteur. Examples from the many waders are Huîtrier pie, Pluvier argenté, Pluvier doré, Combattant varié, Tournepierre à collier, Chevalier gambette, Bécasseau variable, Bécasseau de Temminck and Chevalier arlequin.
Bruant des neiges, Roselin cramoisi, Gorgebleue à miroir and Bergeronnette printanière are examples of passerines that you can see and birds of prey such as Buse pattue and Busard Saint-Martin. Rare guests include Bécasseau cocorli, Phalarope à bec étroit, Phalarope à bec large and Bécassine double.
