Description
Stegeborg lies in the middle of the long bay of Slätbaken. In and around Stegeborg ca 180 bird species have been recorded. The strait at Stegeborg is ice-free almost all winters, if the temperture is not too cold the deeper parts around Stegeborg are also open. Large amounts of Fuligule morillon, Garrot à oeil d'or, Harle bièvre, Canard colvert and Foulque macroule winter in the aera. Numbering in the hundreds sometimes in the thousands. Along with these smaller amounts of less common wintering birds like Harle piette, Fuligule milouinan, Canard chipeau, Sarcelle d'hiver, Grèbe huppé, Fuligule milouin, Grand Cormoran, Héron cendré, Cygne chanteur, Oie cendrée and Bernache du Canada. The area is home to wintering gulls. Many Pygargue à queue blanche also winter here. As do passerine birds like Pie-grièche grise, Grive draine, Grive litorne, and Rougegorge familier.
During spring migration many dabbling ducks (Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard siffleur, Canard chipeau, and Canard pilet), swans and geese can be found. Most common among geese are Oie cendrée and Bernache du Canada. Often in the hundreds. Often a few Oie rieuse, Oie des moissons, and Oie de la toundra. Hundreds of Cygne chanteur use the fields during migraton. Hundreds of Fuligule morillon and Garrot à oeil d'or can also be found. Eider à duvet can also be observed during migration. Quite a few birds of prey can be seen. Some of the more common are Busard des roseaux, Buse variable, Balbuzard pêcheur and Autour des palombes. Sometimes Rougequeue noir can be found. Grèbe esclavon and Plongeon arctique often stay on the waters.
Pie-grièche écorcheur, Roselin cramoisi, Alouette lulu, Gobemouche gris, Gobemouche noir and Alouette des champs all breed on the fields and forests. In the reedbeds Phragmite des joncs, Bruant des roseaux, and Rousserolle effarvatte breed. While Rousserolle turdoïde and Rousserolle verderolle are sometimes heard. Bernache nonnette, Grand Cormoran, Grèbe huppé and Canard chipeau breed. Goéland brun and Bondrée apivore can sometimes be seen. During autumn large flocks of diving ducks, and some passerine birds can often be found.
