Description

Lake Sommen is quite deep and most of the lake is ice-free all-winter. During this period large amounts of Harle bièvre, Garrot à oeil d'or and Grèbe huppé winter in Sommen. Sometimes in the hundreds. Among these Fuligule morillon, Cygne tuberculé, Cygne chanteur, Foulque macroule, and Goéland cendré can often be found. The lake is also home to quite a few rarer wintering birds like Plongeon arctique, Harle huppé, Aigle royal, Macreuse noire, Macreuse brune, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Plongeon catmarin and Mouette rieuse.

During the spring migration marine ducks can be found in the lake. At the same time Plongeon catmarin, and Plongeon arctique, arrive at the lake. Plongeon arctique breeds in the lake while Plongeon catmarin feeds in the lake and breeds in small neighbouring lakes. The rare Plongeon à bec blanc has been seen. Sommen archipelago hosts large colonies of Sterne pierregarin, Goéland cendré, Mouette rieuse, Goéland argenté, Héron cendré and Grand Cormoran. Among these some rare birds like Goéland brun, and Sterne arctique can be seen.

The large decidous forests around sommen especially on Torpön host plenty of quite rare birds like: Gobemouche nain, Pic épeichette, Cassenoix moucheté, and Hibou moyen-duc. Around Sommen there is also old conifer forests around which support large populations of woodpeckers. Torcol fourmilier, Pic vert, Pic noir, Pic épeichette, Pic tridactyle (very rare), Pic épeiche and Pic à dos blanc (extinct in the area) have all been recorded. Other otherwise rare forrest birds found here are: Gélinotte des bois Grand Tétras, Tétras lyre (Rocks mosse), and Cassenoix moucheté.

During the autumn birds can be seen migrating through the lake. Most common are the doves, finches, terns, and waders. At Rocks mosse Tétras lyre and Grand Tétras breed. At Visskvarn there are rapids where Cincle plongeur, and Bergeronnette des ruisseaux can be seen.
