Sandarviken is a shallow bay north of Faludden. The surroundings consist of large costal meadows, with bushy areas and more forested areas, and a lagoon.

Description

At Sandarviken 223 bird species have been recorded. 35 species of wading birds have been recorded.

Sandarviken holds thousands of wintering Fuligule milouinan but Macreuse brune, Macreuse noire, Eider à duvet and diving ducks also winter in smaller numbers. Other waterfowl like Canard siffleur, Canard souchet Sarcelle d'hiver, Tadorne de Belon and Canard chipeau also winter in the area. Sandarviken holds wintering Grèbe huppé, Grèbe jougris, and Grèbe esclavon.Bernache nonnette also winter as do a few wading birds in winter. Bécassine sourde is sometimes found. Wintering birds of prey are often found in the area. Some of the common ones are Busard Saint-Martin, Buse variable, Pygargue à queue blanche, and Aigle royal.

During migration period the bay often holds large amounts of waders. Most numerous is the Bécasseau variable which sometimes number in the thousands. Barge à queue noire, Bécassine des marais, Huîtrier pie, Courlis cendré, Chevalier gambette, Bécasseau variable, Avocette élégante, and Grand Gravelot all breed somewhat regularly. Other wading birds often found are:Tournepierre à collier, Pluvier argenté, Barge rousse, Bécasseau sanderling, Bécasseau de Temminck, and Bécasseau minute. Rarer wading birds like Bécasseau falcinelle, Phalarope à bec étroit, Bécassine sourde and Bécassine double are sometimes found. Many vagrant wading birds have also been found.

In the lagoon Canard chipeau, Canard souchet, Sarcelle d'été and many other dabbling ducks often Feed. Plongeon catmarin and Plongeon arctique often rest at Sandarviken year round. Large amounts of geese use the coastal meadows as resting and feeding ground during their migration. Bernache nonnette and Oie cendrée can sometimes be found in the thousands. Oie à bec court and Bernache à cou roux has been seen.
