Description

The Norsholm area is quite vast and contains many minor sites shortly described here. The areas mentioned are marked with a star on the map. Press on a star and you can see the name of the area.

Grensholmsbron: Winter site with open waters even during harsh winters. Thousands of Fuligule morillon (at most 2000), hundreds of Harle piette (only numerous during november and december), Garrot à oeil d'or (at most 700), Canard colvert (at most 600), and Harle bièvre (at most 600). Among more rarer wintering birds it is most known for wintering Aigle royal, and Martin-pêcheur d'Europe. Other not yearly winter visitors are Bec-croisé bifascié, Durbec des sapins during invasions, and Grèbe castagneux, Canard chipeau, Linotte à bec jaune, Canard pilet, Harle huppé, and Sizerin blanchâtre during birdrich winters.

Norsholms coastal meadows: Reed free coastal meadows which are rich in waders during late spring and autumn. Although only if the water level is right (only during high water). Few arctic waders are found but Chevalier culblanc, Petit Gravelot, Chevalier arlequin, Combattant varié, Chevalier gambette, Bécassine des marais, Bécasse des bois, Chevalier sylvain and Chevalier aboyeur. Chevalier gambette, Vanneau huppé, and Bécassine des marais breed. Grande Aigrette, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, and Harle huppé are common.

Åby strandängar: Reed coated coastal meadows which are flooded during spring floods. They are then usually filled with early waders and ducks. Butor étoilé can be heard singing. All common dabbling ducks are usually found except Sarcelle d'été. Canard siffleur, Canard colvert, and Canard chipeau. On these coastal meadows Grande Aigrette is often found.

Braskens grav: is an oxbow lake of the river Motala ström which often floods making it perfect for waders and ducks. Sarcelle d'hiver is numerous, Chevalier arlequin, and other common tringa-waders are often found along with Bécassine sourde. Grande Aigrette is often found here. Gallinule poule-d'eau, and Foulque macroule breed.

Åby gård: complex of 3 ponds, the large, the small and fiskaretorpet. It is these ponds and the field around them which Norsholm is most known for. It has a bird observation tower. During spring it holds large amounts of ducks and swans with Cygne tuberculé, Cygne chanteur, Canard colvert, Canard siffleur, Canard chipeau, Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard souchet, Fuligule morillon, Harle piette, and Harle bièvre being common and Sarcelle d'été and Canard pilet, being rarer. Other common wetland birds are Foulque macroule, Grue cendrée, Héron cendré. Grand Cormoran often roost here. Rarer birds roosting are Grèbe castagneux, Gallinule poule-d'eau, Butor étoilé (nearby reed areas), and Grande Aigrette. There are small islands in the pond which hold a small tern and gull colony. Theese islands also hold small amounts of waders often; Courlis cendré, Chevalier gambette, Vanneau huppé, Combattant varié and Chevalier sylvain. During early spring the area is great for roosting geese and swans with hundreds of Oie rieuse, Oie cendrée, Oie des moissons, Bernache du Canada, and Bernache nonnette during good years. often along with smaller amounts of Cygne de Bewick (rare), Oie de la toundra, Oie à bec court, and Bernache cravant (rare).

Around these ponds Hibou moyen-duc, Grèbe castagneux, Gallinule poule-d'eau, Cygne chanteur, Grèbe huppé, Bernache du Canada, Oie cendrée, Sarcelle d'hiver, Grue cendrée, Vanneau huppé, Bécassine des marais, Foulque macroule, Mouette rieuse, Goéland marin, Cygne tuberculé, Sterne pierregarin, Faisan de Colchide, Fuligule morillon, Canard colvert, Garrot à oeil d'or, and southern Bergeronnette printanière breed along with more common birds.

During autumn large amounts of ducks can rest (but less than during spring). The small islands grow during dry summers and can some years hold arctic waders like Bécasseau variable, Bécasseau cocorli, and Bécasseau de Temminck. Gorgebleue à miroir, and Bruant lapon can sometimes be found on the surrounding fields.
