Description

Lövselefjärden is a shallow, long-cut bay that is lined with reeds and shallow beaches and clay banks at the far end. For a few years now, its inner curtain of forest has been cleared away and grazing sheep keep the land facing the water and the bay's beach meadows open. The bay usually has plenty of birds almost the entire ice-free season, from April to November.

Of nesting birds, Vanneau huppé, Grèbe huppé and Chevalier gambette can be seen, and many ducks in summer. One or more Fuligule milouinan are often seen - probably from nesting sites further out to sea. Plongeon catmarin is found with several nesting pairs in forest nearby and these loons have the bay as a gathering place. Balbuzard pêcheur but also terns from nesting sites in the coastal belt like to fish in the inner part of the bay. In forest edges and along the eastern side of the bay, in summer there are Pie-grièche écorcheur. During spring and early autumn, ducks rest in higher numbers, sometimes many hundreds. Several species of diving ducks are always to be seen. Fuligule milouinan rests regularly as well as small groups of Harle piette.

To the south, further out in the bay, occasional and marine diving ducks such as Macreuse noire and Harelde boréale. Geese, mostly Bernache du Canada and Oie cendrée often rest on the beach meadows or in the fields inside. The shallow banks and beaches at the far end of the bay attract a lot of resting waders during spring and late summer. Especially at low tide, exciting discoveries of small waders are made. Hunting Pygargue à queue blanche are often seen, lured here by the resting flocks of birds. Larger flocks of pipits, thrushes and finches like to rest on the open meadows and fields within the bay.

Accès

Just five minutes from the E4 is Lövselefjärden. It is best reached on a gravel road that starts at the exit from E4 with a sign "S Lövsele". The inner parts of the bay are then conveniently explored from the small marina on the east side of the bay, at Lillänget where the road ends. Unfortunately, there are few parking options. The gravel road is narrow without parking pockets where it runs close to the bay. On the other side of the bay, in the southwest, there are also two sites at Lövsele harbor which are reached from an exit from the E4 at Västanbyn. Then drive towards Noret.
