At the mouth of Motala Ströms in Roxen large coastal meadows and valueable fields can be found. The rapid waters at the mouth keep the water open year round.

Description

At Kungsbro 212 Bird species have been recorded. Kungsbro is a nature reserve next to the lake of Roxen. At the lake 296 bird species have been recorded. During winter large amounts (hundreds if not thousands) of Fuligule morillon, Canard colvert, and Garrot à oeil d'or. Among these Harle piette, Harle bièvre, Cygne tuberculé, Grèbe huppé, Goéland marin, Foulque macroule, Cygne chanteur, Canard siffleur, and Canard chipeau. In mild winters you can observe hundreds of Oie cendrée, and Bernache du Canada. Sometimes Étourneau sansonnet, Oie rieuse, and Vanneau huppé also winter in the area. Birds of prey like Buse variable, Buse pattue, Faucon crécerelle, Pygargue à queue blanche, and Busard Saint-Martin can also be seen in the area. And Pie-grièche grise.

During spring large amounts of geese stay in the hundreds on the fields and meadows. In some years Vanneau huppé, Oie des moissons, and Alouette des champs are found here. Large amounts dabbling ducks, can be found some of whom breed. Many wading birds like Barge à queue noire, Courlis cendré, Courlis corlieu, Huîtrier pie, Chevalier gambette, Chevalier sylvain, and Combattant varié use the coastal meadows as feeding grounds. From the observation tower you get a good view of the lake. On the lake you can see hundreds of Sterne pierregarin, Goéland argenté and Goéland cendré. Smaller amounts of Sterne caspienne, Guifette noire, Goéland brun and Mouette pygmée can be found from May-September.

Kungsbro has a small colony of Mouette rieuse. Waders like Vanneau huppé, Huîtrier pie, Chevalier gambette, and Bécassine des marais. Other breeding birds are: Canard chipeau, Oie cendrée, Foulque macroule, Sarcelle d'hiver, and Grèbe huppé. Among passerine birds Rousserolle effarvatte, Phragmite des joncs, Bruant des roseaux, Bergeronnette printanière and many more breed.

During autumn Pipit farlouse, Bruant des neiges, Linotte à bec jaune, Pipit à gorge rousse, Pigeon ramier use the fields and coastal meadows as resting ground. Calidris-waders often use the coastal meadows when the water levels at Roxen are low. Among these Bécasseau variable, Bécasseau cocorli, and Bécasseau de Temminck are the most common. Bécassine sourde can also be found. Grande Aigrette and Héron cendré are also often found.

Accès

The nature reserve is just outside the towns of Berg and Ljungsbro. The area is close to Linköping. There is a parking spot at the birdwatching tower and south of the river Motala Ström at Sjöliden parking spaces can be found. Click on a P in the map to get directions to that point.

Note: The coastal meadows are a bird proctection area and the coastal meadows are not allowed to be visited from 1/4-30/6. The birdwatching tower can be visited year round.
