Hölick is located in the southernmost part of Hornslandet and due to its geographical location, many unusual species are seen here during the migration.
Around Hölick there are many nice places to watch birds. The area offers varied environments with beaches of different character, open sandy steppe, nice forest areas and scattered groves to look for small birds. On the sea around the whole of Hölick, many seabirds rest. As long as the sea is Free from ice there are usually exciting seabirds to be found, including rare species such as Macreuse à front blanc, Eider à tête grise, Eider de Steller, Plongeon à bec blanc and Plongeon imbrin. There are several hiking trails that lead to good viewing spots, by the harbor, out by the lighthouse, on Sjählällorna and out on Hornslandsudden are the best places to spot seabirds.
As many birds only rest temporarily at Hölick, the amount of smaller birds can vary greatly. On one visit the groves may be full of small birds but the next day it can be empty. It is important to choose days with the right type of weather if you want to see a lot of birds. But surprising species can appear at any time regardless of the season, so the site is always worth visiting. A long series of unusual birds have been seen in the area. Out on the sand steppe species such as Pipit farlousane, Pipit de Richard and Pipit rousseline have been seen and in the thickets species such as Pouillot à grands sourcils and Pouillot de Pallas. The sea and beach is crowded with bathers in summer, but in autumn when the beaches are deserted, you can find waders such as Bécasseau sanderling, Pluvier argenté, Petit Gravelot (breeding) and Pipit maritime. Also Bruant des neiges and Bruant lapon can be spotted.
Hölick is located 30 km southeast of Hudiksvall. There are several parking spaces within the area. It is easiest to start from the parking lot north of the fishing village, but there is also a large parking lot at lake Vågen. If you want to get out to Hornslandsudde as quickly as possible, there is a parking lot at the end of a forest road (not graded in winter). Press a P on the map for directions to a parking spot.
The walking is mostly easy terrain but some trails cross areas that may be flooded, so boots are preferred. The walk out to Hornslandsudde is more demanding, where you need good shoes as the terrain is rocky. A visit to Hölick is often time-consuming, if you want to see the area out to Skälhällorna and back, you can count on at least a couple of hours of sight-seeing. The site is worth spending a lot of time on.
The area is a popular destination, especially in summer when many go to Hölick to swim. There are maps and information leaflets and the area is well laid out with parking lots, several toilets, fire pits and nice walking trails. Hornslandsudde is a special place with old gnarled pines and sterile cobblestone fields, well worth a visit for its beautiful and distinctive nature alone.
