Description

The Flatruet road goes straight through the breathtaking Swedish highland (Swedish: Fjällen) at a max height of 975 meters. You don't have to go further north to find most of the north Scandinavian avifauna. During the bright summer nights you can watch the Bécassine double perform their leks. Many other species breed here as well like Bruant lapon, Gorgebleue à miroir, Pluvier guignard, Grive mauvis and Labbe à longue queue. Look out over the smaller lakes to find Plongeon catmarin, Macreuse noire and Harelde boréale and keep an eye out to the sky to catch a glimpse of Buse pattue, Busard Saint-Martin and if you are really lucky Faucon gerfaut.

The best time of year to visit Flatruet is in the early summer as birds breeding this far north return quite late to their breeding grounds. Some birds like Lagopède alpin and Lagopède des saules are residents and can be found year round although difficult to find in winter due to their camouflaging winter plumage.

Note that the only way to reach this area is by car and that you should drive carefully as there are many reindeer walking around. It is possible to camp here if you bring your own tent.

Accès

You follow the road labeled 84 into Härjedalen until you reach Funäsdalen. From Funäsdalen you go from the main road north. Here is the start of the 40 km long Flatruet road. The first part is partly covered with trees but look for birds anyway. The largest open part is after you have pased the Samish village of Mittådalen. This road eventually ends in Ljungdalen.

It is possible to park your car along the road and explore the area on foot.
