Description
The Torre Vigía de Castilnovo is a medieval watchtower near the beach of Playa de Castilnovo. Two to three pairs of endangered Ibis chauve return to the structure every spring to lay their eggs and raise their young. The surrounding beaches, shallow pools, salt marshes and mouth of the river Salado can also hold interesting birds like Échasse blanche, Pluvier argenté, Grand Gravelot, Gravelot à collier interrompu, Bécasseau sanderling, Chevalier aboyeur, Goéland d'Audouin and Sterne caugek. During migration the salt marshes are a good place to look for Oedicnème criard.
Note that the amount of gulls, terns and waders depends not only on the seasons (the bird migration months are the best time to see the most species), but also on the crowds on the beaches. When it is busy on the beach, there are much fewer birds to be seen in the area.

Torre de Castilnovo and Playa de Castilnovo are located directly south of the town of Conil de la Frontera. Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking in Conil de la Frontera. From the parking you can cross the pedestrian bridge over the river Salado on foot and explore the area from there. From the parking to the Torre de Castilnovo is about 2 km one way.
