Description

The Sierra de Aracena is not very high and its mountains have a gentle, rounded shape. The area around Jabugo is mostly covered with dehesas. A dehesa is a type of agroforestry and cultural landscape that is characteristic of this western part of the Sierra de Aracena. Cattle graze on these 'flat' pieces of land between (mainly) cork oak and holm oak forests and the black Ibérico pigs forage for their daily meal of sweet acorns. The dehesas are a model for the small scale of the entire Sierra de Aracena. The advantage is that the many trees (and the lined paths that run through them) offer shade to hikers in the warm months. In spring, the ground is covered with a colorful and fragrant carpet of dozens of varieties of flowers with many butterflies, insects and birds.

Jabugo is a town located in an area with an enormous diversity of crops and trees such as figs, mushrooms, many kinds of vegetables, fruit trees, olives, nuts, grains, sweet chestnuts, eucalyptus and especially many cork oaks. The region is known for its signature ham, Jamón ibérico. With the goats, chickens, cows and pigs that roam freely everywhere and lynx, Aigle ibérique and Vautour moine that find their safe habitat here. And many other birds, see the list below.
