A big shallow lagoon with large numbers of birds and a big colony of nesting Flamant rose.
The Laguna de Fuente de Piedra is the largest lagoon in Andalusia. The nature reserve is located in the northwest of the province of Malaga. It's the biggest Flamant rose reserve of Europe. The lake shape is elliptical, with 2.5 km width and 6.7 km long. The rain is the only water entering the system, divided between direct precipitation on the lake, surface runoff and underground supply. The only way out of the pond water evaporation occurs, which determines its closed or endorheic character. After periods of little rain, the lake can partly dry out. The lagoon attracts a lot of species of ducks, gulls, and many other birds. In total, more than 170 species of birds pass throughout the year.
Thousands of Flamant rose can often be seen on the large lake, but often quite far away. However, on the small lakes surrounding the visitor center, you can often easily see them up close. At those small lakes, there are also three bird hides from which you can often get a good view of rare duck species such as Érismature à tête blanche and Sarcelle marbrée.
The lagoon is located just west of the town of Fuente de Piedra. A-92 highway is the main road to come to Fuente de Piedra. Take exit 132. Continue on MA-701 towards Fuente de Piedra, take the second exit at the flamencos roundabout (continue straight), continue straight on Avenida de Andalucía through the town. After the bridge over the railway line, take the first exit on the left. Continue on the paved road to the Visitor Center. Click on the P in the map for directions to the big parking lot.
Public transport: two bus lines stop in the center of the village of Fuente de Piedra: Malaga-Seville Line and Seville-Malaga Line. From the bus stop you will have to walk for approximately 20 minutes (2 km) to reach the lagoon.
You access the area through the visitor center of the nature reserve of laguna de fuente de Piedra. Opening hours of the visitor centre: October 1st to March 31st 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 18:00. April 1st to July 31st and September 1st to September 30th 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 19:00. August 1st to August 31th 09:00 to 15:00. But if the visitor center is closed you can still visit the ponds and the lagoon.
Following 2 km in a road direction la Sierra de Yeguas you will arive to a zone with a lot of Grue cendrée in winter.
