Description
The Barranco del Infierno is a deep ravine that cuts through the mountain range just north of the village of Adeje. The first part of the walk runs through a dry, rocky landscape with beautiful views out to sea. When you reach the old riverbed on bottom of the ravine the landscape changes to a little dense forest along a stream between vertical walls tens of meters high. The old river bed is populated by Canarian willows and its walls are adorned with dragon trees and junipers. At the end of the walk you arrive at the source of the stream: a small waterfall, which falls down from rock wall. The stream that flows through the ravine attracts many birds to the Barranco del Infierno. Among the birds that you can encounter are Buse variable, Grand Corbeau, Faucon crécerelle, Pouillot des Canaries, Mésange nord-africaine, Merle noir, Serin des Canaries, Rougegorge familier, Bergeronnette des ruisseaux, Fauvette à tête noire, Fauvette mélanocéphale, Martinet unicolore and Perdrix gambra.
The most special bird of the Barranco del Infierno is the Puffin cendré. Almost 1000 birds breed in the gorge from March to October. You won't see them, because there nests are hidden high up on the cliff walls and they are only active at night. That is when you can hear the strange calls of the males reminiscent of a crying baby. Females sound deeper and more rasping. But it is a magical experience to hear them calling from all over the ravine. The Barranco del Infierno is not accessible at night, but you can hear the birds in the distance from the entrance gate. Be there at least one hour before sunrise. You can also mail to reservas@barrancodelinfierno.es and ask if they want to organize a special early bird excursion, starting at 04.30. You might get lucky. Be prepared to pay a higher entrance fee for such an excursion.

The route through the Barranco del Infierno, is a strenuous walk. The path takes approximately three and a half hours, between the outward and return journey, and the total route is approximately 6.5 km. Note that in order to visit the area previous reservation is essential due to the fact that the access is limited to only 300 people a day. Go to the Barranco del Infierno website (see the link below) and reserve your time and date. Entrance price is € 13 (2025). Opening hours summer: June 1 - September 15: 08:00h - 14:00h (Access hours: 08.00h - 11.30h). Winter :September 16 - May 31: 08:30h - 14:30h (Access hours: 08.30h - 11.30h).

Wearing a helmet is mandatory. The rental of a helmet is included in the entrance fee. Put on good walking shoes because it is a rocky path. The best birding is early in the morning. But it is also wise to be there early because of the temperatures in the gorge. The later it gets, the hotter and more tiring the walk. Don't forget to take water with you.
