Not only is this a fun stop for tourist reasons, but here you will encounter some bird species you don't easily come across.
Debegeni Falls consists of a waterfall and a fast-flowing river. The surrounding landscape consists of conifers and shrubs. At the river, it is mostly rocky and the hiking trail is slippery during the year. Caution.
Debegeni Falls is mainly known as a tourist spot, but an avid birder will be able to enjoy the presence of some species here. Look out for the Mountain Wagtail seeking food in the river, or the Chorister Robin-Chat and Orange Ground-Thrush singing in the bushes.
Debegeni Falls is located 17 km west of the town of Tzaneen. You reach Debegeni Falls via R71 and near Selati De Hoek Sawmill you have a dirt road that takes you to the entrance of Debengeni Falls. From the entrance, a narrow path takes you to the base of the waterfall. Beware, it is a narrow path and ascending traffic has priority. Above all, stop in good time and move aside whenever possible. Parking is right opposite the waterfall. Press P on the map for directions or coordinates.
Admission is 45 ZAR per person (June 2024). To reach the site, you have to cross a slippery footpath and bridge. At the waterfall you have several picnic areas and toilet facility.
