With its variety of brackish and freshwater habitats, Škocjanski zatok Nature Reserve is particularly interesting because of its high bird diversity.
In Škocjanski Zatok Nature Reserve since 2001 a total of 259 different bird species have been recorded on this protected area of 122,7 hectares. Up to 50 species of breeding birds have been recorded at the reserve so far, although the exact number varies from year to year. There are two separate areas you can visit: a brackish lagoon and a freshwater marsh. In the brackish lagoon you can see birds like Sterne naine, Sterne pierregarin, Gravelot à collier interrompu, Avocette élégante and Échasse blanche. The freshwater marsh offers an excellent breeding habitat for several species which are rare breeders in Slovenia, such as Blongios nain, Râle d'eau, Cisticole des joncs and Héron pourpré, the latter nesting only here and nowhere else in the country. Also you can often see Cormoran pygmée and Busard des roseaux. The dense reedbeds and waterside bushes are occupied by many pairs of Phragmite des joncs, Rousserolle effarvatte, Rousserolle turdoïde and Bouscarle de Cetti.
In winter the reserve hosts large numbers of waterbirds. Many ducks, geese and grebes, but also small flocks of Rémiz penduline, Bruant des roseaux and Panure à moustaches. The wet meadows are a favoured feeding area of Bécassine des marais, Courlis cendré and Pipit spioncelle. But there are many more birds you can encounter, see the birdlist below.
To get to Škocjanski Zatok Nature Reserve, you should exit highway Bivje – Koper at exit Bertoki and turn towards AMZS base. As soon as you cross the road bridge over the highway, turn left. Koper bus and railway station are located nearby the reserve. As no public transportation is available from there to the reserve entrance at Bertoška bonifika, visitors arriving this way are adviced to take a taxi or walk along the Parenzana cycling track to the reserve (approx 20 minutes).

Entrance to the nature reserve is free of charge, while guided tours are charged. Guided tours, which are obligatory for groups, take place during the week (Monday to Friday) between 9.00 and 14.00. Their number is limited, so we recommend to the groups to arrange an appointment at least two weeks in advance.
