Description

Kapetanski Rit, as one of the largest fish farms in Serbia, attracts many bird species like Balbuzard pêcheur (on migration), Busard des roseaux, Pygargue à queue blanche, and many duck and reed warbler species. The smaller and shallower ponds are the perfect place to look for shorebirds, like Avocette élégante, Barge à queue noire, Échasse blanche, Courlis cendré, Courlis corlieu, and many Calidris and Tringa species. Different sections of the fish farm are emptied and refilled with water at different times of the year. Do search for the best sections for wadders at the time of your visit.

The fish farm is really huge, so be prepared to spend at least several hours, if not the whole day. Follow the asphalt road that passes along the fish farm, look for birds from the car, park occasionally, and detour shortly to visit smaller ponds scattered on both sides of the road, often in the second line, so make sure not to miss them, as they are usually very productive.

East of the fish farms lies the protected stepe habitat 'Kanjiški Jaraši', which is also worth visiting (Rollier d'Europe, Pie-grièche à poitrine rose, Traquet motteux, and sometimes even Oedicnème criard).

This fish farm is part of the IBA 'Subotica lakes and sandy terrain'.
