Located on the north bank of the Douro River, the Ribeira do Mosteiro valley is one of the most emblematic places in the Douro International Natural Park, housing a formidable geological, biological and cultural heritage. In this rugged valley, it is possible to observe unique rock formations and walk along the famous Calçada de Alpajares, an ancestral path along which can be found marks of human presence and their coexistence with nature dating back to the Paleolithic. The rugged slopes of Ribeira do Mosteiro form a balcony overlooking geological formation of hills exhibiting curves and countercurves like solid waves that run through the rocks. But also for birding the area is very interesting. The Miradouro das Alminhas is a fantastic viewpoint. Among the birds you can observe in the area are Perdrix rouge, Tourterelle des bois, Vautour fauve, Vautour percnoptère, Circaète Jean-le-Blanc, Aigle botté, Aigle royal, Faucon pèlerin, Huppe fasciée, Guêpier d'Europe, Loriot d'Europe, Hirondelle rousseline, Monticole bleu, Bruant fou and Pie ibérique.

You can reach Miradouro das Alminhas by foot or by car by the Estrada do Candedo (+/- 5 km). Click on the P in the map to get directions. From the viewpoint it is also possible to walk down over a path (400 m) to the river.
