Description

Lagoas de Bertiandos e São Pedro d'Arcos is a protected area that is located in the northwest region of Portugal, in a zone of interaction between the Mediterranean and Atlantic climates. This set of biogeographic factors translates into the presence of high natural importance ecosystems, namely hygrophilous forests, wet pastures, lagoons, rivers and pine forests. These different habitats allow the presence of a large number of bird species, with more than 100 species reported so far. The most part of the protected area is covered by a broadleaf forest, where it is possible to find several birds such as Mésange noire, Mésange huppée, Mésange charbonnière, Mésange bleue, Grimpereau des bois, Troglodyte mignon, Fauvette à tête noire, Grive musicienne, Grive mauvis, Bouvreuil pivoine, Pouillot véloce, Pouillot ibérique, Pinson des arbres, Rougegorge familier, Geai des chênes, Pic épeiche and Pic vert. In this dense hygrophilous forest there are several wetlands, of which the São Pedro and Mimoso lagoons stand out. In these two lagoons there are observatories that facilitate the observation and detection of species such as Sarcelle d'hiver, Grèbe castagneux, Foulque macroule, Héron cendré, Grande Aigrette, Héron pourpré, Aigrette garzette, Râle d'eau, Bécassine des marais, Grand Cormoran, Bouscarle de Cetti and Rousserolle effarvatte. The adjacent areas of the protected area (agricultural fields, pine and eucalyptus forests) also provide the observation of several species, namely Alouette des champs, Pipit farlouse, Linotte mélodieuse, Tarier pâtre, Étourneau unicolore, Étourneau sansonnet, Pie bavarde, Corneille noire, Épervier d'Europe, Autour des palombes andFaucon crécerelle.

This protected area is located in Ponte de Lima, Viana do Castelo. You can park your car in the Interpretive Center and explore all the area on foot. From the Interpretation Center there are several marked trails, of varying length (the shortest is 1.6 km and the longest is 12.5 km). These routes cross the most characteristic habitats of this protected area and allow the observation of a large number of species. If you don't want walk the marked trails, you can just walk along the wooden walkways to the observatories (See the map below).
