Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Goéland leucophée, Goéland brun and Mouette rieuse. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Courlis corlieu, Tournepierre à collier, Bécasseau sanderling and Chevalier guignette.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Sterne pierregarin and Sterne de Dougall, but sometimes also Sterne caugek.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Puffin cendré can be observed. Small numbers of Pétrel de Bulwer can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Puffin des Anglais and Puffin de Macaronésie.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Goéland à bec cerclé, Goéland à ailes blanches and, in 2011, a Bihoreau violacé.
