Description
The Altiplano de Azoia is a windswept dry limestone plateau with wildflowers including gum cistus, green heather, yellow centaury and allseed. Butterflies; swallowtail, Spanish swallowtail. Reptiles; skinks, lizards and whiptail snakes. Mammals; beech marten, Schreiber's bat, horsehoe bats and genet.
Due north from the lighthouse (star mark on the map) there is a display of fossilised dinosaur footprints.
Breeding birds include Cochevis huppé, shrikes, Caille des blés, Bruant proyer, Alouette lulu, Fauvette mélanocéphale, Fauvette pitchou and Bruant zizi. From the western headland at Cabo Espichel, Fou de Bassan, Puffin cendré, Puffin de Scopoli and Puffin des Baléares pass by, and Faucon pèlerin, Martinet pâle, Monticole bleu and Rougequeue noir breed on the cliffs. Also Martinet à ventre blanc, Aigle de Bonelli and Étourneau unicolore can be seen in the area.
The area is on a prime migration route. Expect Faucon d'Éléonore, Merle à plastron, Pluvier guignard and Pipit de Richard.
