Description

The San is one of the lesser-known rivers of Poland. Yet, it's one of those that haven't been changed and regulated as much as larger and more widely known rivers. It's home to ~30 species of fish (i.e. nase, common barbel, river trout) that provide sufficient diet base for many species of piscivorous birds.

In case of river/water biotope-dependant species, year-round, there can be found many Canard colvert,, Mouette rieuse, Goéland pontique, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Héron cendré and Grande Aigrette. There is a good chance to see some Cygne tuberculé, Sarcelle d'hiver, Harle bièvre, Gallinule poule-d'eau, Foulque macroule, Petit Gravelot, Chevalier guignette, Goéland cendré, Sterne pierregarin, Pygargue à queue blanche, Bergeronnette grise, Bergeronnette des ruisseaux and Rousserolle verderolle during spring and summer.

Some species that can be seen time to time or during migrations are: Oie cendrée, Sarcelle d'été, Canard souchet, Canard chipeau, Canard siffleur, Canard pilet, Fuligule milouin, Fuligule nyroca, Fuligule morillon, Garrot à oeil d'or, Grèbe castagneux, Grèbe huppé, Râle d'eau, Vanneau huppé, Bécasseau variable, Bécassine des marais, Chevalier culblanc, Chevalier aboyeur, Chevalier sylvain, Chevalier gambette, Guifette noire, Guifette moustac, Plongeon catmarin, Plongeon arctique, Cigogne noire, Cigogne blanche, Grand Cormoran, Blongios nain, Bihoreau gris, Balbuzard pêcheur, Rémiz penduline and others.

It's worth to note wintering water-assiociated species diversity and numbers, especially in case of Harle bièvre, Garrot à oeil d'or and Cygne tuberculé. Winter is also a great time to seek rare or generally uncommon in the area species, such as Fuligule milouinan, Harle piette, Harle huppé or loons/divers. Often, mixed groups of swans, ducks, grebes and gulls are found. Some predatory species that can be seen during migrations or flying by are: Balbuzard pêcheur, Bondrée apivore, Aigle pomarin, Aigle royal, Busard des roseaux, Busard Saint-Martin, Busard cendré, Épervier d'Europe (also local), Autour des palombes, Milan noir, Pygargue à queue blanche (mainly local), Buse pattue, Buse variable, Faucon crécerelle (also local), Faucon kobez, Faucon hobereau and Faucon pèlerin. There are also some local Chouette hulotte and Hibou moyen-duc.

Banks are covered by trees in general, although quite "loosely". These woods are home to many species of passerines and other birds, such as: Pigeon biset, Pigeon ramier, Tourterelle turque, Coucou gris, Pic mar, Pic épeiche, Pic épeichette, Pic cendré, Pic vert, Pic noir, Loriot d'Europe, Geai des chênes, Pie bavarde, Choucas des tours, Corneille mantelée, Grand Corbeau, Mésange noire, Mésange nonnette, Mésange boréale, Mésange bleue, Mésange charbonnière, Hypolaïs ictérine, Pouillot fitis, Pouillot véloce, Mésange à longue queue, Fauvette à tête noire, Fauvette babillarde, Roitelet huppé, Sittelle torchepot, Grimpereau des bois, Grimpereau des jardins, Troglodyte mignon, Étourneau sansonnet, Grive musicienne, Merle noir, Grive litorne, Gobemouche gris, Rougegorge familier, Moineau domestique, Moineau friquet, Pinson des arbres, Gros-bec casse-noyaux, Verdier d'Europe, Chardonneret élégant and Serin cini.
