The Hardangervidda is the largest mountain plateau in Europe. It is a fantastic birding location where all kinds of special birds can be found.
Hardangervidda is the largest mountain plateau in Europe, covering an area of about 6,500 km2. With an average elevation of 1,100 metres, which is well above the tree limit, the climate is cold and alpine year-round. The barren landscape is dominated by rolling moraine hills, with marshes and lakes lined by willow and dwarf birch in between. In the north, the dark ridge Hallingskarvet rise in stark contrast to the gleaming white glacier Hardangerjøkulen. In the south-west the brick-shaped rock formation Hårteigen makes an outstanding landmark. The plateau is the remnant of a mountain area that was eroded by glaciers during the ice ages. The area owes its current shape to these glaciers, with large open plains, rustic lakes and high peaks on the edge. The number of bird species is not very high, but they are often species that you do not easily see elsewhere, such as Lagopède alpin, Plongeon arctique, Buse pattue or Sizerin flammé.
The road to Lake Tinnhølen reaches the heart of the plateu. The parking lot at Tinnhølen Lake is an ideal place to explore the northeastern part of the area on foot. A triangle walk of about 20 kilometers is signposted. The trail is long, but well-marked and mostly flat.
A circular walk in the area is signposted. Follow the footpath to the Stigstuv mountain hut (about 30 min). Then follow the footpath to the Bjoreidalshytte mountain hut (approx. 2:30 am), and then the paved path (Tinnhølvegen) to the Trondsbu mountain hut by Lake Tinnhølen (approx. 2 hours).
