Description
Leaving from the Main Wharf in Oban, this pelagic starts in Halfmoon Bay before exploring several locations looking for Fiordland Penguin. Heading out to the 'Muttonbird Islands' you have a chance on the increasingly rare Yellow-eyed Penguin, before hopefully finding Brown Skua. We head to the south-east and target a location called Wreck Reef, an enormous area of upwelling, open to the vast Southern Ocean.
Key targeted species are Mottled Petrel, Broad-billed Prion, and January-April Buller's Albatross. Even without these target species the odds of finding something extraordinary are good, and the regular list of species is mouthwatering. Often there are 100+ albatross around the boat at any one time, with Southern Royal Albatross, Salvin's Albatross, and Shy Albatross (white-capped subspecies) and chances of other species such as Black-browed Albatross (both subsp). Huge numbers of Sooty Shearwater, which breed on the nearby islands can be spectacular, with Hutton's Shearwater possible. Cape Petrel (Snares), Northern Giant-Petrel, Fairy Prion, Common Diving-Petrel and Cook's Petrel are also likely. Storm-petrels are often seen with White-faced Storm Petrel the most likey, but Grey-backed Storm-Petrel also possible, and Black-bellied Storm Petrel sometimes.
Without getting carried away the list goes on, as depending on the previous few days' prevailing winds and weather conditions, other tubenosed seabirds from the Southern Ocean are possible.

As the pelagic leaves from Oban at 8am, participants need to have accommodation in Oban the night before. Oban is reached by a walkon/walkoff ferry leaving from Bluff several times a day.
Accommodation in Oban is limited and can be booked out 6 months or more in advance during the busy summer season, so book well ahead of time if planning to do this pelagic. Meeting place is generally outside the Four Square Supermarket just before 8am. This location is a good place to source lunch and snacks. The Pelagic is normally back in Oban by 4pm, so it would be possible to leave on a late sailing ferry, but best to have accommodation for that night in Oban also.
