Description
The Veenoordkolk was created in the past by sand extraction for the A1 highway. After sand was no longer extracted, nature development took place. For example, banks have been made shallow and islands have been created. There is a strategically placed bird hide that is also used for migration counting (see Trektellen.nl). During bird migration, passing birds such as Bécasseau variable and Pluvier argenté regularly make a stopover there. More rare birds such as Goéland à ailes blanches and Goéland bourgmestre have also been observed. The Veenoordkolk is popular among gulls as a sleeping place. Depending on the season, birds you may find include Fuligule milouin, Fuligule morillon, Grèbe huppé, Bernache nonnette, Bergeronnette printanière, Goéland pontique, Goéland marin, Garrot à oeil d'or, Spatule blanche, Avocette élégante, Bernache du Canada and Martin-pêcheur d'Europe.

Nederlands: De Veenoordkolk ligt in de uiterwaard van de IJssel bij Deventer. De plas is in het verleden ontstaan door zandwinning voor de A1 snelweg. Nadat er geen zand meer werd gewonnen heeft natuurontwikkeling plaatgevonden. Zo is de plas verondiept, zijn er oevers verflauwd en eilandjes aangelegd. Het is een overzichtelijk gebied met aansluiting op de IJssel. Er is een strategisch geplaatste vogelkijkhut die ook wordt gebruikt voor trektellen (zie trektellen.nl). Tijdens de vogeltrek maken doortrekkers, zoals Bécasseau variable en Pluvier argenté er regelmatig een tussenstop. Ook meer zeldzame vogels als Goéland bourgmestre en Goéland à ailes blanches zijn er waargenomen. De Veenoordkolk is populair onder meeuwen als slaapplaats. Vogels die je kunt aantreffen zijn afhankelijk van het seizoen onder meer Fuligule milouin, Fuligule morillon, Grèbe huppé, Bernache nonnette, Bergeronnette printanière, Goéland pontique, Goéland marin, Garrot à oeil d'or, Spatule blanche, Avocette élégante, Bernache du Canada en Martin-pêcheur d'Europe.

The lake is wedged between the buildings of Deventer, the highway and industry buildings. From the A1 (E30) exit Deventer center, drive towards Deventer and then the 1st traffic light on the left (at the gas station and the Mac), at the end left and immediately right, 1st left and follow the road to the gate. Parking is possible in the dead-end street leading to the lake. Click on the P in the map for directions. Walk through the gate over the dike to the Veenoordkolk hide.

Nederlands: De plas ligt ingeklemd tussen de bebouwing van Deventer, de snelweg en de productiesites van AkzoNobel en Mallinckrodt Baker. Vanaf de A1 (E30) afslag Deventer centrum, rijdt richting Deventer en dan het 1e verkeerslicht links (bij het pompstation en de Mac), eind links en direct rechts, 1e links en met de weg meerijden tot het hek. Parkeren is mogelijk in de doodlopende straat uitkomend bij de kolk. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Door de poort lopen over de dijk naar het kijkscherm Veenoordkolk.
