Radio Kootwijk is located on the Veluwe, the largest contiguous forest area in the Netherlands. The area has rolling hills, heathlands, red deer, wild boars and plenty of birds in a wide open plain bordered by forests. With Radio Kootwijk at its heart: the broadcasting station that was built in the 1920s. The imposing building contrasts beautifully with the empty, desolate environment. A walk around Radio Kootwijk and through the adjacent Hoog Buurlo brings you beautiful views and opportunities to see birds such as Engoulevent d'Europe, Coucou gris, Épervier d'Europe, Autour des palombes, Bondrée apivore, Pic épeiche, Pic noir, Alouette lulu, Alouette des champs, Rougequeue à front blanc, Gobemouche gris, Gobemouche noir, Grand Corbeau, Mésange huppée, Pouillot siffleur, Bruant jaune and in winter Pie-grièche grise.

Nederlands: Radio Kootwijk ligt in een groot heidegebied op de Veluwe. Een prachtige rondwandeling van 12 km door een glooiend landschap voert je langs schitterende uitzichtpunten en heidevelden. Kans op edelherten, wilde zwijnen en verschillende leuke vogelsoorten in een grote open vlakte omzoomd door bossen. Met in het hart Radio Kootwijk: het zendstation dat in de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw werd gebouwd voor radiotelegrafisch contact met toenmalig Nederlands-Indië. Het imposante gebouw contrasteert prachtig met de lege, woeste omgeving. Heel goede plek om Grand Corbeau te zien en horen. Tijdens deze wandeling rondom Radio Kootwijk en door het aangrenzende Hoog Buurlo kun je vogels tegenkomen als Engoulevent d'Europe, Coucou gris, Épervier d'Europe, Autour des palombes, Bondrée apivore, Pic épeiche, Pic noir, Alouette lulu, Alouette des champs, Rougequeue à front blanc, Gobemouche gris, Gobemouche noir, Mésange huppée, Pouillot siffleur, Bruant jaune en in de winter Pie-grièche grise.

Free parking on the parking lot at the Alverschotenseweg (marked on the map, click on the P in the map for directions to this parking). From there you can take a beautiful trail 'Wandelroute Heidewandeling' (length 12.5 km) via the Hoog Buurlo heath areas and along Radio Kootwijk. This walking route is marked in red and also indicated on the map below. The area can be busy on weekends and holidays, and during the week you can sometimes hear target practice from the neighboring military training ground, the Harskamp.

Nederlands: Gratis parkeren kan op de parkeerplaats bij de Alverschotenseweg (gemarkeerd op de kaart, klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar deze parkeerplaats). Vanuit daar kun je de prachtige 'Wandelroute Heidewandeling' van Staatsbosbeheer (lengte 12,5 km) doen. Deze wandeling loopt via de heidegebieden Hoog Buurlo en langs Radio Kootwijk. De wandelroute is met rood gemarkeerd en ook aangegeven op de kaart hieronder. In het weekend en tijdens vakanties kan het gebied druk zijn en door de week zijn er soms schietoefeningen te horen van het naburige militaire oefenterrein de Harskamp.
