The Nieuwe Robbengat is largely surrounded by large reed fields. In spring, these reed beds are good for many reed birds such as Butor étoilé, Phragmite des joncs, Rousserolle effarvatte, Bruant des roseaux, Gorgebleue à miroir and Panure à moustaches. In winter, the open water is ideal for water birds such as Cygne chanteur, Cygne de Bewick, Garrot à oeil d'or and Harle piette. There are also some beaches in the area and on nice summer days there is a lot of water recreation. A good reason to avoid the area during this period, because you will encounter significantly fewer birds in the summer.

Nederlands: Het Nieuwe Robbengat is een van de grote open wateren aan de noordkant van Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer. Het water is grotendeels omzoomd door grote rietvelden. In de lente zijn deze rietkragen goed voor vele rietvogels als Butor étoilé, Phragmite des joncs, Rousserolle effarvatte, Bruant des roseaux, Gorgebleue à miroir en Panure à moustaches. In de winter is het open water goed voor watervogels als Cygne chanteur, Cygne de Bewick, Garrot à oeil d'or en Harle piette. Er liggen ook enkele stranden in het gebied en op mooie zomerdagen is er veel waterrecreatie. Een goede reden om het gebied dan te mijden, want in de zomer zul je er beduidend minder vogels tegenkomen.

Nieuwe Robbengat is located directly southwest of the village of Lauwersoog. The area is easy to explore by bicycle or on foot via the cycle paths and roads that surround the area. Parking is free at the Lauwersnest Visitor Center. Click on the P on the map for directions to the parking lot. Be sure to take a look inside the visitor center. Entrance is free and the meter-high wall painting about bird migration is especially worth seeing.

Nederlands: Het Nieuwe Robbengat ligt direct ten zuidwesten van de het dorp Lauwersoog. Het gebied is gemakkelijk te verkennen met de fiets of te voet via de fietspaden, wegen en paden die om het gebied heen lopen. Parkeren kan gratis bij Bezoekerscentrum Lauwersnest. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de parkeerplaats. Werp zeker ook even een blik binnen bij het bezoekerscentrum. De entree is gratis en vooral de metershoge wandschildering over de vogeltrek is de moeite waard.

You can also explore the Nieuwe Robbengat by boat. With a canoe or boat you can sail through the narrow channels and creeks and along the reed fields. You can rent a canoe at sailing school De Lauwer (see the link below).
