Description
The Liesbos forest is over 200 hectares in size and consists mainly of deciduous trees. A beautiful forest with pedunculate oaks, but also a variety of other deciduous trees. Conifers have also been planted on the higher dry parts. Also characteristic are the monumental avenues, built for the hunting of the former noble owners to move their hunting carriage quickly and comfortably. In the spring, the forest floor is covered with forest anemones. Because it is a very old forest and also has a lot of dead wood due to rehydration, you can see all 5 species of Dutch woodpeckers in the forest. Furthermore many other forest birds such as Autour des palombes, Épervier d'Europe, Coucou gris, Fauvette à tête noire, Fauvette des jardins, Gobemouche noir, Rougequeue à front blanc, Sittelle torchepot, Grimpereau des jardins, Roitelet huppé, Roitelet triple-bandeau, Mésange huppée, Gros-bec casse-noyaux, Chardonneret élégant and Tarin des aulnes.

Nederlands: Het Liesbos in de Baronie van Breda is het grootste oude zomereikenbos van Nederland. Het bos is ruim 200 hectare groot en bestaat voornamelijk uit loofbomen. Echt een mooi bos met dus zomereiken, maar ook een variatie aan andere loofbomen. Op de hogere droge delen zijn ook naaldbomen aangeplant. Karakteristiek zijn ook de monumentale lanen, aangelegd voor de jacht van de vroegere adellijke eigenaren om hun jachtkoets snel en comfortabel te verplaatsen. In het voorjaar is de bosbodem bedekt met bosanemonen. Omdat het een heel oud bos is en door vernatting ook nog veel dood hout heeft kun je in het bos alle 5 soorten Nederlandse spechten zien. Verder veel andere bosvogels zoals Autour des palombes, Épervier d'Europe, Coucou gris, Fauvette à tête noire, Fauvette des jardins, Gobemouche noir, Rougequeue à front blanc, Sittelle torchepot, Grimpereau des jardins, Roitelet huppé, Roitelet triple-bandeau, Mésange huppée, Gros-bec casse-noyaux, Chardonneret élégant en Tarin des aulnes.

The Liesbos is located north of the highway (A58) to Roosendaal/Bergen op Zoom. There is a parking lot in the Liesbos that can be reached via the Leursebaan. Drive into the Liesbos opposite the Zanddreef. The parking lot is located on the corner Torendreef and Huisdreef. The forest is open to the public, there are short and longer walking routes and there is a restaurant, called Boswachter Liesbosch. The yellow marked trail (3 km) starts from the parking lot, but is often very busy. Better to map out a route yourself (the square path pattern makes it almost impossible to get lost) or walk the 5 km route that we walked (see the map). Please note: the Liesbos is popular and can be crowded especially on weekends, so get there early if you want to see quite a few birds.

Nederlands: Het Liesbos ligt ten zuiden van Prinsenbeek en ten westen van Princenhage. Ten noorden van de snelweg (A58) naar Roosendaal/Bergen op Zoom. In het Liesbos ligt een parkeerterrein dat is te bereiken via de Leursebaan. Tegenover de Zanddreef het Liesbos inrijden. De parkeerplaats is gelegen op de hoek Torendreef en Huisdreef. Het bos is voor het publiek toegankelijk, er zijn korte en langere wandelroutes en er is een restaurant, genaamd Boswachter Liesbosch. De gele gemarkeerde wandelroute (3 km) start vanaf de parkeerplaats, maar is vaak erg druk. Beter om zelf een route uit te stippelen (door het vierkante padenpatroon kun je bijna niet verdwalen) of bijvoorbeeld de route van 5 km te lopen die wij (zie de kaart) hebben gelopen. Let op: het Liesbos is populair en zeker in het weekend kan druk zijn, dus zorg dat je er vroeg bent als je redelijk wat vogels wilt zien.
