Especially in spring and summer the Holtingerveld is an interesting area for bird watchers. Spectacular species such as Grue cendrée and Circaète Jean-le-Blanc are often seen in this period. In the area are living Birds of the forest and the heath that are typical of the eastern part of the Netherlands. For example, Pie-grièche écorcheur occurs in this nature reserve, a breeding bird that is on the rise in the province of Drenthe, and in winter you van see its winter counterpart the Pie-grièche grise. Species like Bec-croisé des sapins, Grand Corbeau, Alouette lulu and Faucon hobereau can be observed in the forest and the heath. Furthermore, almost all woodpecker species of the Netherlands can be found here: Pic noir, Pic épeichette, Pic épeiche, Pic vert and Torcol fourmilier. Also Pic mar continues to spread further north and has also been observed in the area.

Nederlands: Het Holtingerveld is een gevariëerd landschap van bos, heidevelden, stuifzanden en vennen. Het is een een gebied met veel biodiversiteit, wat veel vogelsoorten aantrekt. Het gebied bestaat uit de stuwwal Havelterberg, Ooster- en Westerzand met de vennen Brandeveen, Bosveen en Meeuwenkolonie en het Uffelter Binnenveld.
Vooral in het voorjaar en de zomer is het een interessant gebied voor vogelaars. Spectaculaire soorten als de Grue cendrée en Circaète Jean-le-Blanc zijn vaak geziene gasten in deze periode. In het gebied zijn vooral ook veel bos- en heidevogels waar te nemen die typerend zijn voor het oosten van Nederland. Zo komt hier de Pie-grièche écorcheur voor, een broedvogel die in opkomst is in Drenthe, en in de winter zijn winterse tegenhanger de Pie-grièche grise. Soorten als Bec-croisé des sapins, Grand Corbeau, Alouette lulu en Faucon hobereau kunnen worden gezien in het bos en op de heide. Verder komen hier vrijwel alle spechtensoorten van Nederland voor: Pic noir, Pic épeichette, Pic épeiche, Pic vert en de Torcol fourmilier. Ook de Pic mar, die zich steeds verder naar het noorden verspeid, is al waargenomen in het gebied. Naast mooie vogelsoorten komen in de vennen en poelen bijzondere diersoorten als de kamsalamander en de gevlekte witsnuitlibel voor.
