The Gasterse Duinen consist of an undulating heathland landscape with drift dunes and fens. The fens in the area were once part of the course of the Drentsche Aa stream. That is why the fens are in line with each other. In times gone by, the course was partially closed, leaving two large fens. Birds you may encounter in the area are Linotte mélodieuse, Bouvreuil pivoine, Alouette lulu, Pipit des arbres, Gobemouche gris, Gobemouche noir, Rougequeue à front blanc, Faucon hobereau, Grive draine, Roitelet huppé and Bruant jaune. Surrounding the heathlands is a mixed forest with hedgerows and sparse meadows with hawthorn and bramble bushes. These meadows are the ideal habitat for Pie-grièche écorcheur, Pie-grièche grise (in winter), Fauvette grisette and Tarier pâtre.

Nederlands: De Gasterse Duinen is een prachtig klein natuurgebied van 77 hectare met een golvend heidelandschap, stuifduinen en vennen. Ooit maakten de vennen in het gebied deel uit van de loop van de beek de Drentsche Aa. Daarom liggen de vennen in elkaars verlengde. In lang vervlogen tijden is de loop gedeeltelijk dicht gestoven waardoor er twee grote vennen overbleven. Het gebied is eigendom van het Drents Landschap. Vogels die je in het gebied kunt tegenkomen zijn Linotte mélodieuse, Bouvreuil pivoine, Alouette lulu, Pipit des arbres, Gobemouche gris, Gobemouche noir, Rougequeue à front blanc, Faucon hobereau, Grive draine, Roitelet huppé en Bruant jaune. Rondom de heidevelden ligt gemengd bos met houtwallen en schrale weilanden met meidoorn- en braamstruiken. Deze weilanden met doornstruiken zijn de ideale biotoop voor Pie-grièche écorcheur, Fauvette grisette, Tarier pâtre en in de winter Pie-grièche grise.

The Gasterse Duinen nature reserve is located north of the village of Gasteren and is intersected by a dirt road with cycle path between Gasteren and Schipborg. Parking is available in the parking lot on Oudemolenseweg. Click on the P in the map for directions. The grazed part of the site is not accessible to dogs. The marked walking route through the area is approximately 5 km. The site also contains a dolmen and an approximately 3,000-year-old burial mound.

Nederlands: Het terrein ligt ten noorden van Gasteren en wordt doorsneden door een zandweg met fietspad tussen Gasteren en Schipborg. Parkeren kan op de parkeerplaats aan de Oudemolenseweg. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Het begraasde deel van het terrein is niet toegankelijk voor honden. De gemarkeerde wandelroute door het gebied is ongeveer 5 km. In het terrein bevindt zich ook een hunebed en een ongeveer 3000 jaar oude grafheuvel.
