The Doove Gat is a fairly small wetland area near the village of Haastrecht and is a very popular area among birders to watch typical meadow birds, waterfowl and many other migrating species, like waders. The area consists of three large ponds and several smaller ones, ditches and surrounding meadows and reedbeds. Several small islands are located within these ponds, being a great spot to observe waders during migration, like Bécasseau cocorli, Bécasseau variable and Chevalier sylvain. The area is also used as a roosting area for many species of wader, like Barge à queue noire, Courlis cendré and Vanneau huppé.
The reedbed and several small covered islands are a great spot for Marouette ponctuée, although it has become a scarcer sight in this area. The reedbeds are great for species, like Gorgebleue à miroir, Locustelle luscinioïde and Phragmite des joncs. Often, a Busard des roseaux hunts here.
On the western side of the area, a typical Dutch windmill is located. A Faucon pèlerin often perches on top of the windmill. Martin-pêcheur d'Europe can be seen near the bridge across the Vlist river between the parking lot and the reserve. On the northern side of the area, a nest of Cigogne blanche is present. They can often be seen foraging on the surrounding meadows.

Nederlands: Het Doove Gat is een vrij klein waterrijk gebied nabij het dorp Haastrecht en is een zeer populair gebied onder vogelaars om typische weidevogels, watervogels en vele andere trekkende soorten, zoals steltlopers, te bekijken. Het gebied bestaat uit drie grote plassen en enkele kleinere sloten en omliggende weilanden en rietvelden. In deze vijvers bevinden zich verschillende kleine eilanden, die een geweldige plek zijn om steltlopers te bekijken tijdens trek, zoals Bécasseau cocorli, Bécasseau variable en Chevalier sylvain. Het gebied wordt ook gebruikt als rustgebied voor vele soorten steltlopers, zoals Barge à queue noire, Courlis cendré en Vanneau huppé.
Het rietveld en verschillende kleine eilanden zijn een goede plek voor Marouette ponctuée, hoewel ze in dit gebied schaarser zijn geworden. De rietvelden zijn heel goed voor soorten, zoals Gorgebleue à miroir, Locustelle luscinioïde en Phragmite des joncs. Vaak jaagt hier een Busard des roseaux.
Aan de westkant van het gebied staat een typisch Hollandse molen. Een Faucon pèlerin zit vaak bovenop de windmolen. Martin-pêcheur d'Europe is te zien bij de brug over de Vlist tussen de parkeerplaats en het reservaat. Aan de noordkant van het gebied is een Cigogne blanchenest aanwezig. Ze foerageren vaak op de omliggende weilanden.
