In the past the Schotsman nature reserve was a sandbank in the sea that only dried up at low tide. Since the construction of the Veerse Gat dam, the connection to the sea has been closed off and and thus the current nature reserve was created. The Schotsman mainly consists of grassland, bushes and forest. It is now a beautiful (and sometimes wet) walking area on the edge of the lake Veerse Meer.
In the Schotsman you can see many songbirds during the breeding season and during bird migration, such as the Linotte mélodieuse, Fauvette des jardins, Fauvette babillarde, Bouvreuil pivoine, Alouette des champs andPipit farlouse. Rossignol philomèle is particularly numerous in the area. Coucou gris can also be seen and heard regularly. But this is also a good place for water birds. The sheltered waters in the far west of the lake Veerse Meer near the Veerse Gat dam is very interesting for watching seabirds, especially in strong northwesterly winds. Garrot à oeil d'or, Harle huppé, Grèbe à cou noir, Grèbe esclavon and sometimes Macreuse noire, Plongeon arctique, Plongeon imbrin and Harelde boréale can be seen here in the winter months, sometimes from very close by.

Nederlands: Natuurgebied de Schotsman ligt op het eiland Noord-Beveland aan het Veerse Meer. Vroeger was dit een zandplaat in zee die alleen bij eb droog viel. Sinds de aanleg van de Veerse Gatdam is de verbinding met de zee afgesloten en is er ruimte ontstaan voor nieuwe natuur. Het natuurgebied de Schotsman bestaat voornamelijk uit lage struiken, struweel, grasland en bos. Nu is het een mooi (en soms nat) wandelgebied aan de rand van het Veerse Meer.
In de Schotsman kun je tijdens de broedperiode en tijdens de vogeltrek veel zangvogels zien zoals Linotte mélodieuse, Fauvette des jardins, Fauvette babillarde, Bouvreuil pivoine, Alouette des champs en Pipit farlouse. De Rossignol philomèle is bijzonder talrijk in het gebied. Ook de Coucou gris laat zich regelmatig zien en horen. Maar ook voor watervogels is dit een goede plek. De luwte in het uiterste westen van het Veerse Meer bij de Veersegatdam is erg interessant om zeevogels te bekijken, zeker bij harde noordwestenwind. Garrot à oeil d'or, Harle huppé, Grèbe à cou noir, Grèbe esclavon en soms ook Macreuse noire, Plongeon arctique, Plongeon imbrin en Harelde boréale kunnen hier in de wintermaanden worden gezien, soms van heel dichtij.

Nature reserve De Schotsman is located on lake Veerse Meer opposite the village of Breezand on the Veerse Gat dam. There are 2 hiking trails marked out. The green route (5.8 km, indicated on the map) and the yellow route (3.1 km). Press the P on the map for directions to the car park. It is wise to wear waterproof footwear during wet periods.

Er zijn 2 wandelroutes door middel van paaltjes uitgezet door Staatsbosbeheer. De groene route (5,8 km, aangegeven op de kaart) en de gele route (3,1 km). Druk op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de parkeerplaats. Denk aan waterdicht schoeisel tijdens natte perioden.
