Wetlands due to peat harvesting. The mosaic of water, reed, swamp groves and grasslands is good for birding.
A mosaic of water, reed, swamp groves and grasslands in the excavated peat. That is De Deelen, in the heart of the province of Friesland. In autumn and winter, thousands of ducks and geese, including Canard siffleur, Oie rieuse, Canard souchet and Bernache nonnette come to De Deelen. Rare species such as Guifette noire, Héron pourpré and Busard des roseaux also live in the area. If you listen carefully, you may be able to hear the Locustelle tachetée singing in the spring. Other birds you can see here are Oie cendrée, Spatule blanche, Gorgebleue à miroir, Courlis cendré, Canard colvert, Fuligule morillon, Fuligule milouin, Grèbe huppé, Buse variable, Bernache du Canada, Bruant des roseaux and Sterne pierregarin.
