From the observation tower you have a beautiful view in a westerly direction on the shallows of Achter de Zwarten and in a southerly direction. Many species of small and large species of waders rest and forage in the shallows. Notable species are Spatule blanche and Flamant rose. The egrets and swans are also easy to spot. In the winter half year, the area is visited by many species of geese and ducks. Birds of prey such as Busard Saint-Martin, Bondrée apivore, Balbuzard pêcheur and Milan royal can also be expected here. The Pygargue à queue blanche is also regularly seen from this viewing point.

Nederlands: Vanaf deze uitkijktoren in nationaal park Lauwersmeer heb je een prachtig overzicht in westelijke richting op de ondiepten van Achter de Zwarten en in zuidelijke richting naar de slenk. In de ondiepten rusten en foerageren vele soorten kleine en grote soorten steltlopers. Opvallende soorten zijn lepelaar en flamingo. Ook de zilverreigers en zwanen zijn goed waar te nemen. In het winterhalfjaar wordt het gebied bezocht door veel soorten ganzen en eenden. Ook roofvogels als blauwe kiekendief, wespendief, visarend en rode wouw kan men hier verwachten. Ook de zeearend wordt van dit kijkpunt met regelmaat waargenomen.

On the Marneweg, take the exit "Ballastplaat". After 1500 meters you will see a parking lot. From this parking lot, follow the walking route marked with blue posts (Observation Tower Route). It is a walk of 1,5 km in the woods of approximately 30 minutes. Sometimes it can be very wet to get to the tower.

Nederlands: Neem op de Marneweg de afslag ‘Ballastplaat’. Na 1500 meter ziet u een parkeerplaats. Vanaf deze parkeerplaats volgt u de met blauwe paaltjes gemarkeerde wandelroute (Observatietorenroute). Het is een boswandeling van 1,5 km van circa 30 minuten. Het kan er soms erg nat zijn om bij de toren te kunnen komen.
