Description

Hlawga Nature Park is a great place to go birding if you have a full morning in the Yangon area. Unfortunately the park itself only opens at 9am, but there is good birding nearby. From the ticket office, walk on a bit to a small road to the left, birding down it can be quite productive with Racket-tailed Treepie being the best. From there, go further west, where you can take a small path north towards a lake. Bird the path and lake - for many shrubland species occur here.

Back at the entrance (at opening time) - get a taxi/bus to the western areas near the lake, which have better forest than other areas. In and around the forest and lake edge, you can find Ashy and Rosy Minivet, Asian Green Bee-eater, Ayeyarwady and Pale-eyed Bulbul, White-rumped Shama, Black-naped Monarch, Forest Wagtail, White-crested Laughingthrush and Greater Racket-tailed Drongo. Waterbirds include both Jacanas, Asian Openbill, White-breasted Waterhen, Ruddy-breasted Crake, and Purple Heron. In June, Blue-winged Pitta or Western Hooded Pitta can also be found (but are rare).

It's a long walk back to the entrance, so try hop on one of the free busses that make a round trip. Of note, there are thousands of pig-tailed Macaques - but they generally leave people alone.
