Description

Zona Arqueológica Uxmal is what is left of the ancient Maya city of Uxmal. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture in Mexico. The amazing temples and ruins - like the Pyramid of the Magician or the Governor's Palace - are surrounded by a green jungle full of birds. On top of several buildings you can overlook the tree tops. Sometimes Cave Swallow flock together in big groups above the Great Temple.

Among the other birds you can observe are Turquoise-browed Motmot, Vaux's Swift, Masked Tityra, Lineated Woodpecker, Least Flycatcher, Altamira Oriole, Hooded Oriole, Yucatan Jay, Green Jay, Boat-billed Flycatcher. Black-headed Trogon, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Canivet's Emerald, Plain Chachalaca, Rose-throated Becard and many more. See the birdlist below.

Accès

Uxmal is located in the Puuc region of the western Yucatán Peninsula, 62 km south of the city of Mérida. Best option is to stay in one of the hotels in the surroundings. Make sure that your hotel has a big garden, so you can start birding early already, because the ruins only open at 8.00 am. There is a parking right in front of the ruins. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates.

The fee to enter Uxmal for foreigners is around $ 30. The ruins at Uxmal are open from 8:00 am and close at 5:00 pm, every day of the week, all year round. Last access is one hour before closing time. The most obvious and easiest way to explore Uxmal is on foot. Arriving at 8:00 am when the site opens is not only best for birding, but it also means that you’ll avoid the crowds and have these ancient monuments pretty much to yourself. Within around two hours of opening, tour groups begin to arrive.
