Description
The area around Malta International Airport is at its best in spring, particularly with north-west winds. On good days there can be good numbers of harriers, mostly Busard des roseaux but also Busard pâle (early-mid spring) and Busard cendré (mid-late spring). The site can also be good for Faucon crécerellette and Faucon kobez (late spring). In practice any migrating species can be seen from the area since it is open, such as flocks of herons, waders, Guêpier d'Europe and Rollier d'Europe. Alouette calandrelle arrive in spring and remain to breed in small numbers. Other passerines include hirundines, including Hirondelle rousseline, and pipits, including Pipit à gorge rousse. In late autumn, the site is also one of the best places in Malta to see Pluvier doré and Vanneau huppé. Several rarities have been seen here over the years.
