A bird paradise that is located on the migration route running from the Arctic, through Europe to Eastern Africa, so many birds stop here to feed or breed.
Nemunas Delta is an important rest stop for travelling birds, as well as a breeding ground for many rare species. Its 240 sq km are dotted with islands, marshes and flooded meadows, creating the perfect environment for the 294 different species of bird noted here. Especially during the big spring floods, this area can be an unforgettable experience, since this is when the huge delta meadows are full of rare water birds. Nemunas Delta Regional Park is equipped with trails, observations towers and information stands. One of the options is the Pakalnė walkway (3,5 km, see the map) between two rivers Pakalnė and Rusnaitė where you can see Pakalne polder landscape and birds.
Nemunas delta regional park is easely accessible by both land and water routes. Driving the highway Kaunas-Jurbarkas-Klaipėda you will reach Šilutė and then you will be only 8 km away from Rusnė, located in the heart of the park - Rusnė island, 35 km from Minija village or Vente horn.
The ornithological station in Ventė Cape (Horn) was established in 1929 by professor Tadas Ivanauskas as the peninsula was and still is an ideal place for watching and catching birds. One of the biggest bird migration ways extends over the eastern shore of sea Baltic. Sometimes during September and October more than 3 million birds flies over the area per day! More than 70% of them turns to Curonian Lagoon and then about 30% choose the way crossing sky above the Ventė Cape. After establishing the Ventė Cape ornithological station approximately 60000-80000 birds are ringed per year. Some ringed birds were caught again even in Egypt, Iran and South Africa! Bird watchers are welcome there but groups of schoolchildren too. In order to understand the mysterious features of birds migration and ringing, a little informative museum has been established there.
