Riserva Naturale Regionale Bosco Casale on the slopes of the Frentani mountains, between the Matese massif and the Adriatic coast, is Molise's first protected area. Typical elements of this hilly forest are the oaks and majestic beech trees. The combination of the various environments and the ban on hunting have created an ideal refuge for the over 110 species of birds recorded in the Casacalenda Oasis.
Among the nesting birds of prey it is quite easy to spot Buse variable, Bondrée apivore and Épervier d'Europe. In spring you may have the opportunity to admire migrating birds as Faucon lanier, Circaète Jean-le-Blanc, Milan noir, as well as Milan royal. From the depths of the forest come the songs of Loriot d'Europe, Geai des chênes and Pic vert. It is possible to see Troglodyte mignon, Pouillot véloce, Fauvette à tête noire, Rougegorge familier and other small passerines. Towards sunset the nocturnal birds of prey make their appearance and with a little patience you can hear the calls of Chouette hulotte, Hibou moyen-duc and Effraie des clochers. In autumn and throughout the winter the oasis is a safe refuge for Grive musicienne, Bécasse des bois and Pigeon ramier coming from northern Europe.

Italiano: L'Oasi di Casacalenda, è la prima oasi naturalistica del Molise. Vasta circa 105 ettari. Alle pendici dei monti Frentani, tra il massiccio del Matese e la costa adriatica, si estende la prima area protetta del Molise. Tipici elementi di questo bosco collinare sono i suggestivi cerri e i maestosi faggi. L’insieme dei vari ambienti e il divieto di caccia hanno creato un rifugio ideale per le oltre 110 specie di uccelli censiti nell’Oasi Casacalenda.
Tra i rapaci nidificanti è abbastanza facile scorgere la poiana, il falco pecchiaiolo e lo sparviere. In primavera si può avere l’occasione di ammirare il biancone, oltre al nibbio reale e al lanario; mentre dal folto del bosco arrivano il canto del rigogolo, ghiandaia, picchio verde e della gazza. È possibile scorgere, scriccioli e luì piccoli, capinere, pettirossi e piccoli passeriformi. Altre specie comuni risultano le cince, il canapino e la tortora. Verso il tramonto fanno la loro comparsa i rapaci notturni e con un po’ di pazienza si possono sentire i versi dell’allocco, del gufo comune e del barbagianni. In autunno e per tutto il corso dell’inverno l’oasi è un rifugio sicuro per tordi bottacci, tordele, beccacce e colombacci, provenienti dal nord Europa.

The Oasis of Casacalenda is located east of the village of Casacalenda. It is possible to drive to the entrance of the oasis in the Macchia Puzzo district and park on the roadside. Click on the P in the map for directions. The walking route indicated on the map is about 2 km.
