Description
Prader Sand is a protected natural area known as one of the last remaining floodplain landscapes of the Vinschgau valley. This biotope lies at the foot of the Ortler Alps, where the Suldenbach river once flowed freely across the valley floor. Over centuries, the river deposited sand and gravel, creating a unique mosaic of wetlands, dry meadows, and sandy soils. After the river was dammed, much of this floodplain disappeared, but the Prader Sand remains as a rare remnant of the original wild river landscape. Today it is carefully protected as a nature reserve.
The varied habitats of Prader Sand attract many birds. Among the birds you can observe are Canard mandarin, Fuligule morillon, Chevalier guignette, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Grèbe castagneux, Grèbe huppé, Grand Corbeau, Fauvette à tête noire, Rossignol philomèle, Bergeronnette grise and Bergeronnette des ruisseaux.

Questo biotopo si trova ai piedi delle Alpi dell'Ortles, dove un tempo il fiume Solda scorreva liberamente attraverso il fondovalle. Nel corso dei secoli, il fiume ha depositato sabbia e ghiaia, creando un mosaico unico di zone umide, prati secchi e terreni sabbiosi. Dopo la costruzione di una diga, gran parte di questa pianura alluvionale è scomparsa, ma Prader Sand rimane come un raro residuo dell'originario paesaggio fluviale selvaggio. Oggi è attentamente protetto come riserva naturale.

Prader Sand is located in Prato allo Stelvio (Prad am Stilfserjoch), South Tyrol. You can reach it easily from the village center of Prato allo Stelvio by foot, bike, car, or public transport. Press P on the map for directions. From the parking the site is accessible through the trail 'Naturerlebnispfad Prader Sand', a circular route of 4.8 km. Along the way, there are 19 information stations about the ecology of the floodplain. The trail leads through pine woods, open sandy areas, and past small fishing ponds, offering a varied landscape in a compact area.
