Description

The Longarini lagoon is a wetland area of about 200 hectares located in the territory of Ispica, a few hundred meters from the coast. It is the largest of a complex of marshes that extend between Ispica and Pachino. The lagoon attracts a wide array of species throughout the year. In winter one can see Flamant rose, several species of ducks, Foulque macroule, Vanneau huppé, different species of herons, Busard des roseaux, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Rémiz penduline and more. During migration, the area attracts several typical wetland species, including waders such as Chevalier aboyeur and Échasse blanche, as well as migratory ducks like Sarcelle d'été and Fuligule nyroca. The site is one of the last places where Sarcelle marbrée breeds in Italy. Re-introduced Talève sultane can also be seen.
