The mouth of the river area, enclosed in an area of 1256 hectares, with its coastal dunes and interdunal lagoons represents a photograph of the coastal environment before human intervention. To the west of the Bevano mouth the Ortazzino area is consisting of old meanders of the river, ancient coastal dunes and wet meadows. Adjacent to the humid meadows of the Ortazzino is the humid area of the Ortazzo, an ancient freshwater valley obtained from old rice fields. The variety and complexity of the environments makes this site rich in biodiversity for flora and fauna.
In the areas of Ortazzo and Ortazzino a large community of nesting birds has settled, such as Goéland railleur and Mouette rieuse and a strong presence of waders such as Échasse blanche, Avocette élégante, Gravelot à collier interrompu and Chevalier gambette can be observed. The presence of ducks is noteworthy, such as the Tadorne de Belon and occasionally nesting Sarcelle d'été and Sarcelle d'hiver. As for the coastal environment, the only species present in a fairly significant number is the Gravelot à collier interrompu. As regards the Passerines, the presence of the Pipit rousseline should be noted, a species in strong numerical regression that nests on the dunes of the Ortazzino. The mouth of the Bevano, the Ortazzino and the Ortazzo are also easily reachable by car through two entrances from the Adriatica state road. Sightings are also possible thanks to the presence of two watch towers, one in the Ortazzino area and one in the western part of the Ortazzo, where there is also a bird hide.

Italiano: Il fiume Bevano è caratterizzato da una foce meandriforme a estuario, l’unica rimasta dell’alto Adriatico ancora in continua evoluzione. L’area della foce, racchiusa in una superficie di 1256 ettari, con le sue dune costiere e le lagune interdunali rappresenta una fotografia dell’ambiente costiero prima dell’intervento dell’uomo. A Ovest della foce del Bevano si sviluppa l’area dell’Ortazzino costituita da meandri fossili del fiume stesso, antiche dune costiere e prati umidi con falda affiorante. Adiacente ai prati umidi dell’Ortazzino si sviluppa la zona umida dell’Ortazzo, antica valle d’acqua dolce ricavata da vecchie risaie, che oggi vede però intrusioni di acqua salata. La varietà e la complessità degli ambienti rende questo sito ricco di biodiversità per flora e fauna.
Nelle aree dell’Ortazzo e dell’Ortazzino si è insediata una grande comunità di Caradriformi nidificanti, come Gabbiano roseo e Gabbiano comune e si osserva una forte presenza di Limicoli come Cavaliere d’Italia, Avocetta, Fratino e Pettegola. Notevole la presenza di Anatidi, quali la Volpoca, attualmente in fase di espansione; occasionalmente nidificanti Marzaiola e Alzavola. Per quanto riguarda invece l’ambiente costiero, la fauna risente della forte presenza antropica, l’unica specie presente in numero abbastanza rilevante è il Fratino. Per quanto riguarda i Passeriformi è da segnalare la presenza del Calandro, una specie in forte regressione numerica nidificante sulle dune dell’Ortazzino. La Foce del Bevano, l’Ortazzino e l’Ortazzo sono facilmente raggiungibili anche in macchina attraverso due ingressi dalla statale Adriatica. Gli avvistamenti sono possibili anche grazie alla presenza di due torrette di avvistamento, una in zona Ortazzino ed una nella parte occidentale dell’Ortazzo, dove è presente anche un capanno.

The area is accessible all year round. Recommended time: early morning and late afternoon. Duration: minimum two hours. Free access. Paths partially accessible to the disabled. Near the river mouth, the former guard house houses the Cubo Magico Bevanella Visitor Center, a starting point for guided tours (on foot, by bike or by boat) by reservation.
