Oasi Arnovecchio is located in an old meander of the river Arno. In recent times there were mining activities for the production of gravel, which lasted about forty years, which led to the formation of some lakes. Currently the area is characterized by a mosaic of different environments and has undergone spontaneous processes of naturalization. The quarries in particular have been colonized by numerous birds. Arnovecchio is often used by ducks as a stop for migration or wintering. Among the birds you can see are Fuligule milouin, Fuligule nyroca, Fuligule morillon, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Grèbe huppé, Grèbe castagneux and Cormoran pygmée. Italiano: Grande Stagno ricco di uccelli acquatici e passeri. Usato spesso dagli anatidi come sosta per la migrazione o svernamento. L’area di Arnovecchio, collocata in un paleomeandro dell’Arno che fu rettificato nel corso del XVI secolo da Cosimo I de' Medici, fu interessata in tempi più recenti da attività estrattive per la produzione di ghiaia, durate circa quarant'anni, che portarono alla formazione di alcuni bacini lacustri. Attualmente è caratterizzata da un mosaico di ambienti diversi che, sebbene di origine artificiale, con il progressivo abbandono delle attività produttive sono andati incontro a processi spontanei di naturalizzazione; le cave in particolare sono state colonizzate da numerose specie faunistiche e floristiche.

Coming from Pisa or Florence, take the FI-PI-LI highway, take the Empoli Est exit junction and turn right at the first intersection. Once you reach a roundabout, take the SS.67 towards Empoli centro and follow it for about 500 meters (up to the Bianconi Restaurant), turn right into via Cantone and immediately after turn right again into via del Piano all'Isola. Follow the road (narrow, but paved) until its junction with Via Arnovecchio, turn right and walk another 300 meters. It is accessed on the weekend from the only entrance on via di Arnovecchio. Access to the protected natural area of Arnovecchio is free during opening hours (see the link below).

Italiano: Per chi viene da Pisa o da Firenze percorrere la superstrada FI-PI-LI, prendere lo svincolo in uscita Empoli Est e svoltare a destra al primo incrocio. Raggiunta una rotonda prendere la SS.67 in direzione Empoli centro e percorrerla per circa 500 metri (fino all’altezza del Ristorante Bianconi), svoltare a destra in via Cantone e subito dopo ancora a destra in via del Piano all'Isola. Seguire la strada (stretta, ma asfaltata) fino al suo innesto con via Arnovecchio, svoltare a destra e percorrere ancora 300 metri. Si accede il finesettimana dall'unica entrata su via di Arnovecchio.

There are three bird hides that do not surround the lake but overlook only one bank, I recommend a telescope.
