Description
Foce del Simeto is an area of great naturalistic interest and an oasis of rest and refuge for a rich and articulated birdlife. You can find marshy vegetation and brackish lagoons. It is one of the most important wetlands of the plain of Catania and for ducks and herons among the most important areas in Sicily. Relevant species to be mentioned are the Fuligule nyroca, which here presents the only regular nesting site in Sicily, or the Talève sultane, recently reintroduced at the mouth of the river Simeto. Other equally important species have permanently colonized the site in recent years, such as the Héron garde-boeufs, Canard chipeau and Ibis falcinelle.

Italiano: Area di grande interesse per la peculiarità di ambienti e per rappresentare un’oasi di sosta e rifugio per una ricca ed articolata avifauna. Si rinvengono aspetti di vegetazione palustre, salmastra di lagune inondate e psammofile.Il perimetro del sito comprende una delle aree umide più importanti della piana di Catania ed ospita dei nuclei nidificanti di Anatidi e Ardeidi tra i più importanti della Sicilia. Tra le specie più rilevanti sono da citare la Moretta tabaccata, che qui presenta l’unico sito regolare di nidificazione in Sicilia, o il Pollo sultano, recentemente reintrodotto alla foce del fiume Simeto. Altre specie ugualmente importanti hanno colonizzato stabilmente il sito in questi ultimi anni, quali l’Airone guardabuoi, il Canapiglia e, dal 2004, il Mignattaio.

The Foce del Simeto is located 10 km south of Catania. It can be easily reached by the S.S.114 from Catania proceeding in the direction of Syracuse or by the Catania ring road from the last exit Ponte Primosole. It can also be reached by public bus with line 538 (Piazza Borsellino-Vaccarizzo) of A.M.T. Catania.
